Extended reality, explained for the built world

EnableXR was a one-person consulting practice that helped engineering, construction and professional-services teams make sense of CAD, PLM, BIM, GIS and XR. The practice is dormant now, but the door is still open.

01 / The practice

New technology arrives wrapped in vendor language. EnableXR existed to unwrap it: to show leaders what digital twins, immersive tools and connected models can really do, what they need underneath them, and where to start.

02 / Fields

Seven technologies, one connected picture

Each of these is a discipline in its own right. The value shows up when the data flows between them.

XR

Extended reality

Virtual, augmented and mixed reality for design review, training and customer experience, grounded in the engineering data that already exists.

DT

Digital twins

Master data and live sensor information brought together into a working model of an asset, so decisions are made on what is happening now.

CAD

Computer-aided design

The 3D geometry everything downstream depends on, and the tools and hardware behind it.

PLM

Product lifecycle management

One controlled source for product data, change and process, from concept to retirement.

BIM

Building information modelling

Shared, structured models and the modern working practices that come with them.

GIS

Geographic information systems

Location as the common thread: placing assets, networks and buildings in their real geographic context.

SC

Smart cities

What happens when BIM, GIS and live data meet at district and city scale, and what that means for the people who plan, build and advise on them.

03 / Approach

Consultative, not promotional

A

Education first

Start by making sure everyone in the room understands the technology and the vocabulary. Good decisions follow from that.

B

Past the hyperbole

Independent of any vendor. The job was to separate what works today from what is still a slide.

C

End users in the loop

Technology only lands when the people using it are engaged and properly trained in both the software and the process.

Education and research

Education engagement

Clyde & Co

Helping a global law firm understand BIM and the modern working practices behind it.

The engagement was educational by design: what BIM is and how project teams work with it, and what is now possible with digital twins and smart cities.
